I have been involved in youth ministry since 1992 in church, para-church, and Christian school settings. I am currently the Director of Ministries & Volunteer Development with Serve Our Youth Network in Des Moines, IA – a ministry that reaches out to high-risk children and youth throughout Central Iowa.
I am currently the interim pastor of a new church start up – Grace Evangelical Free Church in Indianola, IA . I will am also on the leadership team for an Evangelical Free Church plant (backed by Ankeny Free Church and the Central District of the EFCA) for primarily Altoona, Pleasant Hill, and Bondurant, IA. named CrossWay Community Church, this will be our permanent church home. We are tentatively looking to launch on September 14, 2008. Prior to that my ministry within a local church as been on the teaching team of my adult Bible fellowship at Valley Church (EFCA) in West Des Moines.
I have been married to Cheryl since 1993 and have three wonderful kids, all of whom have contributed to the increasing number of gray hairs on my head (but at least I still have hair – unlike certain youth pastors I know).
Oh yeah, I also speak. I have spoken at venues throughout the Midwest (and a few outside the midwest). I enjoy speaking to middle school, high school and college age youth, but also love the opportunity to fill a pulpit on Sunday mornings (limited availability at the moment). What Others Are Saying
“I recommend Shane to any camp or organization that needs a speaker to effectively communicate God’s word and connect with youth in a real and changing way.”
Seth Fagerland, Program Director
Cooperstown Bible Camp, Cooperstown, ND
“I would like to recommend Shane Vander Hart for youth speaking. Shane spoke at our youth retreat and did an effective job at communicating with the youth. I was very pleased with the Biblical content as it was mixed with methods to keep the kids listening. His points were clear and were age appropriate. Please give him your consideration as you are looking for a speaker. “
Doug Sikkink, Director,
Grindstone Lake Bible Camp, Sandstone, MN
“I really enjoyed having you (at our retreat) to speak. I got some good comments from the kids as well. They liked you and your messages and they said you had great illustrations. Thank you for getting in there and leading a team and hanging out with the kids. I know it was a tiring weekend and thank you for sticking in there. I think you had a good impact on our students and they really learned from you. I appreciate all you did.”
Brett Starr, Associate Pastor of Youth Ministries
First Federated Church, Des Moines, IA
“Shane has a passion to see students transformed by the renewing of the mind through the ministry of the Word. Having an articulate and creative approach, bringing truth alive, he is a person of integrity who communicates through his walk with Jesus Christ.”
Sean McDowell, Pastor of High School Ministries,
Constance EFC, Andover, MN
“I am the Spiritual Life Director at Christian Haven, a residential treatment center for at-risk youth in Wheatfield, Indiana. Each week we have various speakers from the community share their faith in Christ. Shane was one of our featured speakers. Although I was not personally present to hear Shane speak, I received excellent feedback from those who did. I might add, that speaking to the at-risk community only works when the speaker is sincere, honest and caring. These qualities emanate from Shane as they are central to his character.”
Tom Andrews, Former Spiritual Life Director
Christian Haven, Wheatfield, IN

Dear Shane,
I notice that you have a technorati rating of 97. My blog crept up to 16, then slipped to 14, and has just registered a 10! I have no idea how this works, and I am not too concerned about it. But the competitive spirit in me says that if there are points at stake I WANT TO SCORE! Did your 97 just happen mysteriously or do you do something to achieve those high ratings? Any word on this for me?
P.S. As a Huckabee man, you may be interested in my advocacy of Bret Schundler for VP, a solidly conservative and uncorruptible evangelical with a stellar record of achievement. Also look for a forthcoming post on reverence and joy that you will find interesting.
Brother!
What a relief to see you do this kind of work-it is in very sense a mission. A commission.
There really are “seven thousand” that have not bowed the knee to Baal. Now 6998 to go!
Just kidding. Maybe.
